As the first in a series of jobs at the VA Hospital in Washington, DC, INTEC was selected to perform this extensive electrical survey of the entire 400-bed Medical Center. Based on an electrical engineering study of deficiencies throughout the Hospital performed by Square D, INTEC prepared an analysis, |

field survey and design for the replacement of distribution switchboards, feeders, major disconnect switches, automatic transfer switches, and electrical panels. Much of the Hospital electrical infrastructure was aging and had been identified as unsafe, as a result of not meeting short circuit protection requirements. INTEC staff physically surveyed the entire Hospital to create a comprehensive panel schedule for the facility as part of the design work, and developed a more accurate one-line drawing for the overall distribution throughout the Hospital.
One of the innovative solutions we recommended was the replacement of non-fused disconnects switches at transformer locations with magnetic trip-only circuit breakers. This maintained the short circuit interrupting capabilities without adding an additional overload trip in the circuit.
Getting access to areas, finding equipment that was not mentioned or shown in the original report, and correcting errors in Square D’s report regarding cable lengths gave us good ratings with our client. We finished the project on schedule, even though the survey was much more involved than anticipated. The VA has awarded us two additional projects, as confirmation of their satisfaction with our performance on this contract. |
